I decided to join BT because it is more than just a telephone company. On top of traditional and mobile telephones, it's pioneered Broadband, Video, Wireless and now the new 21CN system. It's leading the way in so many areas and I wanted to be a part of that.

I'm on the Wholesale team, currently in the second year of my apprenticeship. As well as regular study, I've been exploring the engineering side of BT. As part of the job I get to meet BT's customers face to face and deal with any problems with equipment and services. Right now, I'm also focusing on completing my NVQ.

Most of my time is spent in the exchange dealing with the equipment there. This provides our core services to customers - ISDN, Megastream, Telephony and SDH. I'm on the team that deals with any problems or maintenance. That can mean anything from repairing a small fault to updating an entire system.

The best thing about my job is the unknown. I never know what kind of work I'll be doing each day and I also get a lot of satisfaction from helping to make sure that everything is running as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

In our business, technology is moving on all the time, so change is constant. We have to learn about it first so we can introduce it and then make sure it keeps working - that keeps you on your toes. I believe that change can be influenced by just one person, but takes many to get it to work. If we all do our little bit for the company, then BT with continually move forward and become even more successful than it is today.
