I'm a year into my apprenticeship and I've already worked with three different business units and been on several training courses. When you're not studying, you're in the field shadowing an Engineer - as well as giving you practical skills it also gives you a good taste of what the job's going to be like. I started out in the Small to Medium Business Phone Systems team before joining Data and ICT where I learnt a lot about networking and ICT equipment. I'm now in Large Business Phone Systems which has been great as I've worked on some really high profile projects. Arsenal's new football stadium was one job and I've also helped out on large installations for banks such as Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse.

I thought all the other Apprentices would be school leavers like me, so I was surprised to see that I was the youngest on my team and that some were 21 years old. We all get on well as a team and it's a really friendly group - wherever I've gone, in fact, I've found this such an easy company to fit into.

I enjoy the work itself as it's different all the time. Most days will start with me arriving at a BT building to meet the Engineer I'll be working with. They'll access our job sheet online and we'll gather the tools we need before heading off to the client's site. Working in central London we don't use vans - we get around on the tube and buses. You're reimbursed for all your expenses, of course.

Change is a big feature of life at BT and everyone has the chance to influence change within the organisation. As one example, every year you fill out a care survey which gives you the opportunity to tell the company what you think about how it is running. Also, there are always projects running to encourage you to get together in teams and think of new ideas for the company.
