Ubiquitous Positioning

Ubiquitous positioning

Ubiquitous PositioningRobin Mannings, a chief researcher in the Research and Venturing Department based at Adastral Park, has recently had his first book published. It is entitled “Ubiquitous Positioning” and is published by Artech House. In his spare time, Robin is a part time PhD student in the Computing Dept of Lancaster University and the book is based on the early chapters of his PhD thesis. Robin believes this up and coming and potentially disruptive technology has great commercial potential, as well as being a fascinating topic to study.

The book is aimed at business people and those interested in technology, and provides a practical, in-depth understanding of ubiquitous positioning - the technology that identifies the location and position of people, vehicles and objects in time and space in the digitised networked economy. The future and growth of ubiquitous positioning will be fuelled by the convergence of many areas of technology, including; communications, mobile telematics, internet technology, location systems, sensing systems, geographic information systems and the web. This first-of-a-kind volume explores ubiquitous positioning from a convergence perspective, and offers a comprehensive road map of this burgeoning field. The term "Whereness" has been coined to encapsulate everything about current and future ubiquitous positioning technology and business. The first part of the book has an overview of current and future applications from areas as diverse as sports and games, road tolling, security, logistics, supply chain management, health, wellbeing and care. The second part is a technology primer covering radio positioning (e.g. GPS, Galileo, cellular radio, wi-fi and RFID), sensor based systems (e.g. cameras, ultrasonics and inertial), maps and mapping, web 2.0 and the semantic web.
