General Information

Holborn ATE 1927

BT Archives moved to Holborn Telephone Exchange in July 1997 to a purpose built repository. This facility reflects BT's commitment to preserving and giving access to its unique and priceless archival collections.

In addition to being a place of deposit for public records, BT Archives has also been approved by The National Archives National Advisory Services as meeting their standard for archives repositories.

Customers are asked to note that BT Archives is unable to undertake research on their behalf. Customers are encouraged to visit the Archives in person to make use of our well equipped facilities to further their project. We are open to the public throughout the year on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 am - 4 pm. An appointment is essential to ensure access to the building, and to reserve a study desk.

The user's guide to the BT Archives explains access conditions and how to use the Archives. Also available is our events in telecommunications history, a chronology of the development of telecommunications and BT in particular until the end of 1999. A more concise History of BT is also available.
