Research fellowship

Exploring potential

BT has strong links into higher education, and is committed to expanding them through our Short Term Research Fellowship scheme.

The scheme offers researchers the opportunity to carry out a research project that they propose - typically of six weeks’ duration - with a focus on innovative ideas that will challenge current thinking. The proposal should be relevant to BT business.

As a guide listed below are the current top level research themes for BT, however if you have a proposal on a different subject that you think is relevant to BT business then please submit an application as detailed in the 'How to apply' section below.

Business Class Open Services - Because services are at the core of our future business
Customer understanding, SLA delivery, virtualisation, industry wide change

The Knowledge Enterprise - Because knowledge is key to everyone’s activities
Semantic technologies, intelligence, predictive enterprises, data fusion

Information Networking - Because future networks will be mainly information based
Evolving internet architecture, massive data, policy, business models

Open Media Experience - Because customers demand rich media experiences
Fixing service quality, new forms of media, customer experiences

The scheme is open to lecturers, professors and Ph.D-qualified research students working in fields relevant to a global IT, communications and networking services company. For some or all of the of the six week period you may be based at Adastral Park, near Ipswich, UK: one of the leading centres of technical innovation in the communications world.

Results from projects undertaken often lead to longer-term research and a continuation of relationships between BT and research fellows.

There is an Honorarium payment of £4,500.00 after the fellowship is completed. Travel and subsistence is negotiated with the fellow’s BT line manager.

  • An investigation into multi-dimensional auctions for workforce scheduling and staff empowerment

  • Modern Multi-objective Heuristics for Design Planning

  • Data Mediation for Dynamic Data-Driven Service-Oriented Application

  • An Investigation on a Wireless OSS Gateway through Policies and P2P (WOSSP)

How to apply:

The closing date for the 2008 scheme was 11th April 2008, applications will no longer be accepted.
The 2009 scheme will be advertised in December 2008.
