What is RSS and why would I want to use it?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is a technology that allows websites to share and distribute their latest content. RSS-enabled websites, such as this site, are now providing RSS feeds that list article headlines and summaries and link back to the latest full articles on the website. This means you can have the latest news delivered to you in one place without having to remember to visit many different websites.

If you are a journalist or researcher, this can save you a lot of time. You can subscribe to news feeds on this site, browse the headlines and summaries only and determine which news releases you want to read in more detail.

It also means that you won’t necessarily have to receive relevant BT news releases via e-mail - the RSS feed will automatically update each time we issue a news release, freeing up your inbox.

And it isn’t just BT that is supplying RSS feeds - plenty of other companies are doing the same, meaning you’ll spend less time searching for news and can focus on the developments at BT and elsewhere that interest you most.

How do I use RSS?

You’ll need to download and install an RSS news reader, then subscribe to some RSS news feeds.

Choosing an RSS reader

RSS readers tend to be either stand-alone programmes, or plug into an existing programme. Stand-alone RSS readers sit in the background on your desktop and automatically update the feeds you have subscribed to. Plug in readers will work with your existing web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. You will need to ensure that the reader you choose is compatible with your operating system.

There are many readers available to download either for free, or to buy commercially. Links to a few of the readers are listed below.

Once you have installed an RSS reader, you’re ready to subscribe to RSS feeds. You will need to follow the instructions on your particular RSS reader.
